It wouldn’t be Zuventurez APU without a little #girlboss love.

Meet APU undergraduate student Shayanne Wright ‘18, International Business and Entrepreneurship major and GOAL digger.

Shayanne founded LEFT in 2016 and has been PITCHIN’ twice in our PITCH competition and around the world.

What has been your favorite part of Zuventurez?

[Shayanne]:  My first year at Zuventurez I really learned the foundation of startup culture. One thing that’s important to know is that there is a lot of room for people who don’t know about it that much. It’s a place where you can leave your fear of failure at the door and confidently go in knowing that you will be encouraged and learn great information that is directly applicable from my work in APU to my work outside the APU community and through your company.

My second year, I really dug into the aspects of  the whole Zuventurez community. I had made amazing connections and friendships, I knew everyone and really cared for all the teams, mentors and staff. Zuventurez is a community of entrepreneurs. We all have our different passions and callings but together we make each other better and are pursuing a collective vision to make our world a better place through our communities.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about joining Zuventurez?

Don’t overly criticize your idea before you start the program. Zuventurez is for anyone who has an idea and wants to make it better and bring it to life.  I want to encourage more women to join the program because I know a lot of women who may opt out because they overthink the logistics of their idea. Whether or not your idea seems feasible is not what Zuventurez is about, they are here to help you along with the process of developing your idea and making it a reality. So, take the program as seriously as you can by working on your PITCH, traction and building relationships with the coaches.

Calling all #GIRLBOSSES and dreamers!

Taking risks is hard for anybody, but Shayanne pointed out that through her experience and research, women are less likely to take risks. Shayanne and LEFT breaks this barrier by encouraging others to take their ideas from their minds and dreams to the drawing board. Your ideas are worth sharing and your insight helps others to reach their dreams as well!

How did you come up with your idea?

I knew I wanted a mobile app/web application and it started late in my freshman year in 2016, before my startup and tech internship in San Francisco. I took everything I was learning and applied it to the idea I had.  It gave me the insight and vision that prompted me to create an app that has the infrastructure to help tons of people through the medium of travel.

The LEFT Team and Mission

I work in a coworking space, FLDWORK, which has been such a great experience because the companies that work there have the common vision of working together for the betterment of their communities and out world. Our mission at LEFT is to enable all travelers that want to do good in the world and help them do it at a reasonable price. It’s in our business model and woven into the culture and strategy of our company to pursue missions, churches and non-profit groups, not simply wealthy organizations. There’s a need for tech in churches and spaces where tech hasn’t been utilized to the best of it’s ability. In addition, we are passionate about equipping study abroad students through our app and scholarships so we can multiply the social impact.

Winning Third Place! $2,000

The money is going towards our team of employees for the summer. We already have interns but we are trying to bring on full-time staff. This will go towards contracted employees, sales and giving us runway until we close our route.

The Importance of Angel Investors
Our recent investor event raised about $8,000 and was very personal and meaningful for me. It is wonderful to expand on who LEFT is and we are already planning our next event which will be an official launch into our next phase. We are hoping to branch out in San Fran in the future as we close our next *round.

*Closing a round means that you’ve complete a stage of your company’s investments (falls between $250,000 - less than a million) that you raise with angel investors or family.  This is done with a lead investor that is committed to you.

What’s Next for LEFT?

We are actively looking for angel investors or high net worth individuals to invest in our startup and looking for warm introductions to any potential clients. We’ve had so many little wins over the past 2 years and we’re excited to see the many more to come!
